  • The pricing of quilts reflects a combination of factors that ensure you're receiving a product of the highest quality:

Time-Intensive Craftsmanship: Each quilt is a culmination of hours of labor (16-30+), with some taking days or even weeks to complete, especially if they're handcrafted.

High-Quality Materials: Premium fabrics and batting not only enhance the quilt's feel and durability but also come at a higher cost compared to standard materials.

Unique Designs: Original and bespoke designs often require more time in planning, designing, and execution, adding to the overall cost.

Specialized Skills: Quilting is a craft that takes years to master. The expertise of skilled artisans, who bring intricate designs to life, is factored into the quilt's price.

Wage Ethics: Ethically paying fair wages to ensure sustainable and responsible production naturally incur a higher cost.

Limited Production: As many quilts, especially handcrafted ones, are not mass-produced, they don't benefit from economies of scale, leading to a higher per-item cost.

In essence, when purchasing a quilt, especially from artisans or specialized shops, you're investing in a piece of art, a story, and a tradition, all of which are woven together by skilled hands.

  • Each quilt I create isn't just a product; it's a labor of love, imbued with immense care and intricate detailing. Much like bringing a new life into the world, the passion and devotion I pour into every quilt feels as though I've birthed a new entity. As a testament to this deep connection, every quilt is honored with a human name, reflecting its unique identity and the special place it holds in the ESBE family. Just as a parent names their child, I name each quilt, signifying its individual story and the love with which it was crafted.

  • To ensure the longevity and beauty of your ESBE quilt, follow these guidelines:

Washing: Hand wash or use delicate cycle on machine wash with cold water. Use a mild detergent, preferably one designed for delicate fabrics or quilts. Use the color absorbing sheet provided in your order for the first wash to ensure no stray color wanders.

Drying: Lay the quilt flat to air dry. If using a dryer, opt for a low heat or air fluff setting. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent color fading.

Ironing/Steaming: ESBE quilts can be ironed or steamed to remove deeper set wrinkles. Check your authenticity card for material composition and follow your irons material settings. Most wrinkles can be removed from a quick tumble in the dryer on fluff/low.

Folding: Follow the folding instructions provided below to minimize crease lines in your quilt and ready it for storage.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place. If storing for extended periods, place it in a breathable cotton bag or wrap in a cotton sheet to prevent yellowing or fabric degradation.

General Care: Rotate and refold your quilt occasionally to prevent creases or wear along the same lines. Avoid placing heavy objects on the quilt to maintain its shape and loft.

Regularly checking and lightly shaking your quilt can help maintain its fluffiness and ensure even wear. Remember, with proper care, your quilt will remain a cherished piece for years to come.

  • An authenticity card is a testament to the singular artistry and heritage of each ESBE quilt. Born from our passion to blend commercial artistry with functional design, every quilt we craft is accompanied by its own unique authenticity card which furnishes details such as the quilt's name, provenance, dimensions, materials, and the techniques employed. Crucially, it bears a distinct identification code exclusive to that individual quilt. Given the bespoke, one-off nature of our designs, we regard each quilt with the reverence accorded to fine art. Envisioned to be heirlooms, these quilts are intended to journey through generations, and the accompanying authenticity card safeguards their rich narrative, lineage and value.

Seal of Authenticity

With each One of a Kind or Bespoke ESBE quilt comes an Authenticity Card — a simple affirmation of its unique lineage. This card notes its name, materials, techniques, and a singular identification code. With ESBE, every quilt carries its own narrative, quietly preserved for generations.

The Right Way to Fold

If your quilt is to be folded for a prolonged time you must take proper measures to fold your quilt correctly to prevent creases.

Pricing Transparency

The True Cost of a Handmade Quilt

At ESBE, we believe in being transparent about the costs associated with crafting a handmade quilt. It’s important for our customers to understand why quilts, especially those made with ethical practices and meticulous craftsmanship, come at a higher price point.

Commercial and big-brand stores have unfortunately devalued traditional crafts. While you can purchase a quilt or bed set for as little as $100 at these stores, this amount often doesn’t even cover the cost of materials for a baby blanket, let alone the many hours spent creating it. There’s no judgment in choosing these products—household items often need to be budget-friendly—but ESBE quilts are intended for those who seek something more.

ESBE quilts are ethically made goods, crafted with quality and storytelling at their core. These are occasion quilts—more than just functional items, they are works of art for your home.

Fabric: A double-sized quilt averages between 10-14 yards of cotton fabric at $20/yard. We’ll split the difference at 12 yards totalling $240. When we work with specialty fabrics, the costs increase significantly.

Binding: Typically, you need 0.75 yards of fabric for binding, adding $15.

Batting: For batting, I only use 100% cotton, which costs $29-$35/yard, and you typically need 3 yards of extra wide batting, bringing the total to $87.

Thread: 500m cotton silk finish thread x 2, totalling $19.

Top Quilting: When your quilt is sent to a long-arm quilter, this can start at $230 for a double-sized quilt using a basic digitized pattern and run up to $800 for custom designs.

Hands on Labour: Assuming even a modest hourly rate of $25/hour and a minimum of 30 hours of work, this amounts to $750.

Altogether, the total cost for a basic quilt, using the lowest associated expenses, already reaches    $1,341 before tax.

This does include time spent on concept design, pattern development, sourcing fabric, overhead expenses, notions or wear and tear on machinery.

We do not purchase in bulk or outsource production outside of Canada. Depending on the intricacy of a quilt, labor can range anywhere from 20 to 100 hours. This investment in quality, materials, and ethical practices is what makes an ESBE quilt truly special and worth the cost.

To illustrate the costs involved, here’s a breakdown of what goes into making a basic double quilt, using average data:
